Hijum
Detailed maps of Hijum...
The earliest church records regarding the Brolsmas are
found in the church books of Hijum and Hallum (see The
Brolsma book, p. 24), dating from the 1650s. These books are
nowadays part of the Rijksarchief in Leeuwarden, and can be seen on microfilm.
There are two churches in Hijum. One, Bethel, is a
"new" church whose building dates to 1877. The other, Sint
Nicolaastjerke, dates back much earlier, to 1150.

The Sint Nicolaastjerke is not in regular use, but you can obtain
a key to visit it from the Society of Old Frisian Churches, whose
caretaker lives a short walk from the church at Skoallestrjitte 16. |

The exterior of Sint
Nicolaastjerke, portions of which are now 850 years old, reflects its
Romanesque architecture and changes in its structure over the centuries. |

The interior of Sint
Nicolaastjerke is also of interest. |
